Sutherland High School acknowledges gaming
Written by Ryan van den Bergh

Dear Gamer

Part of ensuring the growth of eSports is the development of gaming at school level. To develop the game at school level, it is important that schools accept the fact that eSports gaming is now considered to be a sport by the Department of Sport and Recreation and by the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee to which the MSSA is affiliated.

Of course there is still a long way to go as there are still many schools that are resistant to acknowledging the importance of eSports gaming.

But of course there are the significant victories along the way that make all the effort worthwhile.

Sutherland High School is yet another school that has begun to accredit gamers that have excelled. The MSSA has been advised that on Monday, 19 July 2010 Sutherland High School awarded school colours to a gamer.

This is one of the reasons for eSports gaming to go the traditional sports route!

Not only does the award of school colours validate the gamer, it also changes perception of eSports gaming in the eyes of the community as a whole. Parents, teachers, and South Africans as a whole will see eSports gaming in a new light.

The new perception in turn will add a great deal of fuel to an already vibrant community.

The future is therefore very bright for the future of eSports gaming - we might all just have to wear shades...

Edgemead High School proved to be an excellent venue for the ASUS 2010 MSSA Western Cape LAN Championships that was held on the 17th and 18th of July 2010.  Special thanks must be extended to Bryan Banfield and The Lair who set up the network and ensured the smooth running of the competition.

The first day of competition saw GUITAR HERO being played.

GUITAR HERO

By now everyone should know that the GUITAR HERO competition at the ASUS sponsored MSSA provincial LAN championships are qualifying rounds for the WORLD CYBER GAMES (WCG). SAMSUNG is the sponsor of this part of the competition and has undertaken to bring up the top two players from each and every provincial championship to play in the Qualifying Finals to be held in Sandton on 7 August 2010. MEGAROM also sponsored the event through the loaning of equipment to ensure that the event was a success.

After a fiercely contested championship, the following players emerged as the medal earners:

Mohammad immediately stamped his authority on the championships and demolished every single player that he encountered. It was not uncommon to see Mohammad racking up huge scores against his opponents. At the end of the day, Mohammad had scored an impressive 42 goals and had only conceded 2 goals.

The final results are:

PROVINCIAL COLOURS

It is always satisfying to award provincial colours to deserving gamers. The colours are not awarded lightly and are awarded only when gamers meet the following criteria, and are always awarded on residency:
  • Win all of their games at a Provincial Championships, and/or
  • Finish in the top 20% of gamers at both a Provincial and National LAN Championships.
It therefore gives me great pleasure to announce that the following gamers have earned their Provincial Colours at the Western Cape Championships:

Mohammad Javadinia Knights Mind Sports Provincial

Gage Ridley The Lair Provincial

SCHOOL PROVINCIAL COLOURS

It should be noted that both Mohammad and Gage earned both Senior Provincial Colours and School Provincial Colours a great achievement indeed!

Xola called up for another tour of duty!
Written by Ryan van den Bergh
Tuesday, 13 July 2010 00:00

Dear Gamer

When a player becomes a member of the official national team, the player remains a member of such team for the next calendar year, when normally a new selection is undertaken.
Thus, team members may be called on by the MSSA to do additional ‘tours of duty’ to represent South Africa in international events.
So it is with Xola Magwaza, currently the senior team member of the National eSports Team, who has been called upon to represent South Africa at the Hyundai Global Challenge in South Korea in July 2010.
The game played shall be FIFA Online and the prizes are:
  • 1st prize is a 130 Hyundai motor vehicle,
  • 2nd prize is 5 million Won (R31,228.12), and
  • 3rd prize is 3 million Won (R18,737.10).
The experience that Xola will earn at the Hyundai Global Challenge will prove to be invaluable in preparing the team that shall be selected to play at the 2010 IeSF Grand Final at the end of September 2010.

All gamers are reminded that there is still time to qualify for the 2010 National Team Trials at the following two provincial Championships:
18 July 2010 – ASUS 2010 Western Cape Provincial LAN Championships, and
1 August 2010 - ASUS 2010 Eastern Cape Provincial LAN Championships.
